Yeah, there must be…..

What does this particular clark have that sustains him? Through the years of….name changes, professional/personal controversy, on again off again fans/popularity. To be clear, I’m not a “fan” of Prince, he of no name, however, he has made music I like. A lot. This clip for instance. I really like this clip. Hm. Maybe I am a fan.

Why? What is it about this clip? There are times when a music video, a film, a scene from a film simply “resonates”. It evokes an….emotion, a reaction that is plain and simply, physical. No thinking involved. No “figuring”. It simply is a thing that causes a “reaction”. Hm. Think I just might be a fan of “pure” creativity.

This man, who hails from a musical background, has managed to live in the world of his choosing. The world of the arts. Music, film. Prince appears to have transcended prejudice, fair weather fandom, transitional phases…no doubt his own damn self. You know like us, only on a grander scale.

So one thing led to another, you know how that goes with the Tube.  I got to watching various music vids of Prince’s 2013 tour of Portugal and his 2014 tour of England. The one up there at the top of the post. It was filmed at a show in Manchester, England.(duhyeah Girlie, they can read). His audience adores him! They sing his lyrics, they clap their hands enthusiastically. Prince, his music, is infectious. There is sharing on a grand scale of something undescribable. It’s the same yet completely different. For each person.

Did you know he wrote the song Manic Monday? Silly me! I always thought it was writtne by the Bangles! I didn’t know this. Until today. I never would have guessed that Prince could write such a “girly” song. LOL  Come on, admit it! The man’s got charisma. And musical chops. And a rather consistent penchant for musical hooks.

Prince’s manifestation of his creativity has been pretty damned consistent for well over 2 decades. And I am ridiculoulsy impressed by this. It’s not often an artist can sustain a style, an energy ,over time… as they age. As much as I love, love Metallica there is no mistaking they’re no longer kids. The “edge” is gone. The edge of youth. The energy. Of youth. It’s different now that they’re middle age men.

Time does not necessarily erode creativity but it sure does affect it’s manifestation. Yes! I’m hooked on that word. Whadya want?! I’m a clark and when you get right down to it, our creativity never stops trying to manifest itself. The trick, the key is finding the one thing that keeps it all fresh. Maybe it’s more than one thing. Maybe it’s multiple things.

And then, maybe as Joey laments, “somebody put something in my drink“.

I love charisma! That’s something I’m trying to develop in my “brand” 🙂
I love that you love music so much. I love your take on all things clark. Oh, I could just hug you!
Prince…formerly known…yes, I have the Purple Rain one. OMG I LOVE that song!
Music once played a huge part of my life: guitar lessons, piano lessons and finding music that just RESONATED with my beating heart. 🙂
You could be a song reviewer. Or a musician reviewer. I love your take!

I love that you love that I love music so much! It is as precious as the air we breathe.
So Ms. Pictmilitude, you will be starting the fall semester with a program of music that you will have practiced for your new students, si? You will be the profesor de música española. I love google translate!
Even people who really, really don’t like Prince…like Purple Rain!!
Thank you Cyndi:) If I thought I could earn a living reviewing music/songs/musicians, hell even if I couldn’t earn a living at it, I believe I would still do it.

I believe I know what you mean when you say “once played a huge part” in your life. For people like us? huge becomes a relative term. Because music is a part of us. Will always be with us. It’s our “wallpaper”.

Other than Hendrix, is there a better example of the (potential) range of our people, than Prince? (and great example of seeming to be one while being the other).

    • GirlieOnTheEdge July 5, 2014 / 10:11 pm

      He truly is the example.
That is the coolest thing. Seeming to be but so not. Writing that piece and enjoying all the Prince vids made me think of your post about appetites. The appetite of clarks in particular. Honestly, it’s a topic I want to give a lot of thought. No! Not for the typical clarklike reasons but simply because I don’t know that I ever considered it. Not really.

I know I’m tricking myself by saying I don’t have to think about it. When a clark finds a passion, discovers a thing that alters time – that is when a clark can “seem to be one while being the other”. When there is total unselfconsciousness, when confidence isn’t even a consideration because there is no sense of a lack of it, when a clark is engaged in (whatever) the passion/creative thing-expression and that thing is manifesting itself. That is magical.
The only example I have for my own self, the only passion I ever had that put me in that place of stopped time was when I was taking sound engineering courses. My favorite part was doing the labs. I’d go to do them at night since I worked all day. The lab was located in the basement of the building. Small rooms with a modest mixing console but it didn’t matter. Mixing down tapes was all that mattered to me. Mixing, creating, pefecting. Total stoppage of time. Engaged in a creative process on a purely molecular level. Very cool.

Since I brought up the whole “appetite” thing over here, no thanks to you, lol, I will make it a point to remind you to talk more about it at the Doctrine. I’m sure there are plenty of clarks who would welcome the discussion:)

    THis part is so true…

…funny it came from your comment, I guess the whole piece is talking to me today… thanks Denise…

I trust you on that one Zoe:) There is something about Prince’s music….
Makes me happy you found this a “fun read”. Very often that is my hope. That people see the fun part when I write. Often as a clark it doesn’t always come across that way. LOL

Thank you Zoe for throwing my words back at me. A high compliment indeed. I often find that it’s from the conversation(s) that emanates from a piece of writing where I find that “golden nugget” and where I often “see” something I didn’t previously.
      Thanks for stopping by:)

Ho to another music lover, Denise!!!
I didn’t know Prince wrote Manic Monday until I read this!!!

Excellent! And thank you for the reminder that it is okay to be continually reinventing ourselves — including name changes — even if in the end we are virtually the same.

    • GirlieOnTheEdge July 9, 2014 / 7:56 pm

You are most welcome Molly! What clark on the planet does not do the “reinventing” thing?:)
We are the same but not. Each new “layer” gets absorbed and well, maybe we are virtually the same. Only a more intense version of ourselves. At least I’d like to think so! LOL
