Before There Was a Before, There Was a Now.

Good Saturday, it’s Halloween (1), the last day of October and the very last day of Daylight Savings Time (2), morning! Welcome. I am Girlie (3) and this is my blog, GirlieOnTheEdge.

Like many of you (right?), I’m distressed today is the last day of the savings time. (I need the saving!). But as is the nature of this living thing, there is an end time to events, relationships, seasons. Except! my most favorite season (4) has barely made itself known. Sure, the leaves have experienced their color burstation. Sure, they insist on falling to the ground. Alas, they’ve dis-associated from their tree mothers and eagerly wait to be blown god know’s where. *sigh*

Beginning long ago, in the early days of the “before time”, there came to be 1 day (2 if special dispensation was received) when I knew it was fall. When I felt fall. Not a rational, explainable in words thing. I dubbed that day “The Epitome of Fall” (5). It was a joyous day as I reveled in the knowing, the feeling, the presence of Autumn. I can’t say that I’ve experienced that day yet. I’m trying not be stressed about missing it 🙂

I awakened from a bizarre dream this morning, cold and cramped. (funny, I was cold in my dream too!). I don’t know why, but my landlord turned off the heat last night. It was 36 degrees outside when I woke up. Given the first reaction perspective, that’s worth bitching about. And then I thought, hmph…at least I have a place to sleep, a room within which to write these words, a place of beginning (6).

Regardless of where we are in life, we have the choice, the opportunity (given we wake up that day) to be present in that day. For there is magic (7) to be had. In that place. Now the persnickety part is being able to access it. Yes. I’m serious. Who will tell me that the routine of each day does not have the ability to dampen one’s imagination? obscure lines that are not hard fast by nature? deter our natural inclination to simply enjoy life?

Routine is life’s number one killer! Routine. LOL I hadn’t planned on writing about the evils of routine today. In fact, there are times I’m grateful for routine. The days, for whatever reason, I need to function on autopilot. Then, routine comes in pretty darned handy!

I’m still a tad chilly. Still have my hood up but I have 2 windows that face approximate East. You got it – the sun is beginning to shine (8). The sky is blue, it’s color turned up to maximum autumnal hue (9). I’d say it’s time to get up, get out and see what there is to see. Time to see…. that which I cannot see (10).

Know, feel, participate, give. We have today. It’s the only day.

I recall one exemplar of the season of Autumn as being a time when the sky was full of ‘that blue shit’. And this was not a negative characterization, it’s just that the sky on a very clear and very Fallish day attains a hue that is quite arresting. It speaks of cold weather disguising itself as fair. (As a matter of fact, the term ‘Fair Wind’ relates to the direction of the wind, here in the Northeast, a Fair Wind would be southwest up to northwest. The wind, this is case would be coming off the landmass.)
That has very little to do with Autumn, Daylights Saving Time (or is that Daylight Savings Time?)
    …FRIST

The bell has been rung! Ye are FRIST!
No, I would not take that as a negative characterization although a passerby would wonder what in sam hill you were referring lol
The hue of blue is phenomenal this time of year for sure. And you are so right! I dressed today as if I was going out into a cold day and it was so not cold. It was a gorgeous, no coat required kind of day. I was tricked on the day of trick or treating! LOL
Thank you for sharing the derivation of “Fair Wind”.

I do love autumn and I’m a little sad that it’s almost over, even as I wish the raking leaves part was finished too. I think I know what you mean about “that” day that is the epitome of fall. It’s the day where the light is exactly right and the smells are as they should be and it’s just fall.

Standard time sort of sucks, but I’m trying to be happy about it not being dark until almost 8 am anymore. With both boys working we’ve turned into an early bird family and it’s hard getting motivated in the am while it’s still dark.

Oh, Vanessa…you nailed it! (hey, no pun intended lol). It is about the light and the smell and well, you get it 🙂

Yeah, seems to be choosing the lesser of 2 evils. But I totally get if you’ve got 2 offspring (no matter how old!) to get out the door it seems to help all involved if it’s lighter. Personally though, I’d really like Daylight Savings Time to be an annual thing:) My pet peeve is that I will be driving to work in the semi dark and most days back in the dark! I suppose the positive spin is that when next March rolls around and I’m still around for it, I will so appreciate turning the clocks ahead 😀

Really, it’s Fall? I just thought summer has just been on a little vacation. Not looking forward to darkness at 5 pm but, like Vanessa said in her post, a little more light in the morning is not a bad thing. I almost wore my Cuddleduds today to keep the cold out of my person. Still trying to enjoy the outside as much as I can before you know who (Old Man. . . .) makes an appearance. Stay warm.

No, but you and Vanessa are right. Have to find the silver lining or the sliver of light! in all of this time change stuff.
I suppose without the contrast there might not be the same appreciation.
Almost?! That close huh? lol Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of opportunity for the Cuddleduds real soon 🙂

I am so impressed by your refusal to allow the lack of heat to set a negative tone to your day! Hope the rest of it is enjoyable.

Nope. I couldn’t let that cast a shadow on what turned out to be a beatiful, Indian Summer day!
It was May, thank you. I hope you enjoyed your day as well 🙂

LOL Great way of putting it! Ah, the “blue shit”. Yeah, we’ve had a few nights it got down way low. It’s why I was so surprised when I finally got out and about. It warmed up so quickly!!

Thank you so much. Right now I am living for all the routine I can get. I don’t like the daily challenges that keep coming up with having to take care of the elderly and I try to keep my daily life as routine as possible. My daily diet keeps me from gaining weight. I know what I will need to eat..I know what to expect from my day..does it keep me from finding the fun of changes/?? Thanks for the Social Distortion. Haven’t listened to them for a long time. I think I need a little more Social Distortion and a little less routine !

You’re welcome. With challenges of the magnitude you face each day, routine must surely be an advantage at times. Ah, hopefully not just eating because you have to! (I’m sort of like that lol) Do you tend to eat pretty much the same thing every day? There is security and comfort from knowing what to expect but every now and then? it feels good to just “roll it” however that might manifest. Never hurts to shake it up every now and then 😀
You know, I wasn’t a fan but I love some of their songs. Hard to believe how long they’ve been around. Glad you enjoyed it!

Electric mattress pad, Denise. It will change your life!
There’s always a day in August, somewhere in the middle of the month, when you can just TELL that summer is waning. It may be 95 degrees outside, but there is an aura of pending change. Fall is my favorite season. I love the changing leaves, the bright blue of the sky. sweaters and boots.

      I believe you Dyanne!
I know what you mean. The light is different. The leaves are really quite beautiful now but I’m afraid the trees will be bare very soon 😦
      Me too! Sweaters and boots!

The last couple of weeks have had many ultimately fabulous fall days. Then this week, we will be getting near record high temperatures. I want to embrace them all, yet life doesn’t always allow. Boo.
Routine can most certainly bog one down in blahness. Gotta keep finding the positives and rewards the routine things, though. Otherwise, a person could live one miserable life.
How often do you use the word “persnickety”? I rarely use it, but just 5 minutes ago, I wrote the word in a comment at Dyanne’s blog.

We’re supposed to be warmer here too. In the 70’s! Unbelievable for November.
I totally agree Christine. If you can’t switch it up finding the positives can go a long way to giving “routine” a whole other look.
I don’t know that I’ve ever used the word “persnickety” until this post! lol Wow, that is kind of freaky huh? 😀

Having it be lighter in the mornings now is okay by me. Our nights aren’t in the 30’s yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long. There was snow in the Cascades yesterday, so the cooler nights are coming. I made homemade beef stew today, so that is another sign of the changing of the seasons in our house. Routine helps me stay on top of things, but I like breaks in routine so I can experience the unexpected moments that add joy and excitement into our lives.

Beef Stew! Surely a sign that the season has changed. Stew and mac an cheese and all those “hearty” hot dishes. Yup, fall has arrived with the stew 😀
I’m glad you take those moments to shake it up a bit. Good for you Pat!

You see I was excited for fall back. I do love that extra hour of sleep. Which resets me to wake up early with the kid but its mostly light out by then so I am good with it. And I get to see sunsets without feeling like I stayed up past my bedtime. BUT YOU SEE> FLORIDA IS A BITCH. Do you know what the weather is today. DO YOU? heat index of 100. Seriously. Redunkulous. is what it is.

Have to say I enjoyed that extra hour too! And for some reason this year I’m adjusting better to the difference. I’ve been able to get up when I’m supposed to now lol. I’m sure it’s much better sending your daughter off to school in the daylight.
Good for you Erin. I love sunsets too. Oh, I know how Florida can be. I lived in New Smyrna Beach for 10 years. I was talking to someone in NSB yesterday and he told me it was around 90 degrees air temp. and humid. Yuck! Even for FL that’s hot in November. Heat index of 100! No thank you! Yes, redunkulous lol

This feeling of fall is elegantly stated here.
    🙂
I am alone really, in this, but I love all the seasons. Faull is my favourite, but I love winter and its greyness. There is something beautiful in that as well as in the colours of fall, but people do not appreciate being cold. I can understand, but then I just remember those humid and sticky ones and I embrace the winter chill.
Not yet though. I don’t really notice the time change. An extra hour or whenever it gets light or dark, I just enjoy both.
I do like the TToT and people from everywhere, describing what fall means to them and what that looks like where they are.

I enjoy all the seasons but can’t say I love any other season 🙂
Winter can have magical moments for sure. When the air is still and clear and cold and it begins to snow. So silently, filling the sky. covering the ground… I do love the hush of first snows, at night especially.
You are a hardy soul to embrace winter chill!
