Sometimes a little encouragement goes a long way and sometimes it’s found in the most unexpected places. Today’s Six is a continuation of my Six last week. Hope you enjoy 🙂
************************
She reached for the newspaper that lay half open on the kitchen table, a small coffee stain in the crimped upper corner of Page 3 grabbing her attention as she carefully eased her body into the chrome trimmed art deco chair she’d recently purchased at the vintage shop a few blocks from her office. What was happening?
She read the article’s title again, it’s 14 pt typeface a visual megaphone – “Local Defense Attorney, Presumed to have died in her sleep last Friday Night“ – the logical part of her brain, seduced by something as yet unidentified, caused her to wonder aloud (so she thought) who of her colleagues had died last week and how was it she didn’t know?
Was it Barb Jacobson – could have been her, Barb’s getting on in years and she’s been under a particularly heavy caseload these last few months and that’s on top of heading up the prosecution team in a high profile case; surely it couldn’t be Anita Denny – but I suppose even at her young age it could, she’s had as bad a caseload as Barb, poor thing…
She hadn’t noticed the earworm, “Space Oddity” and Bowie’s lyrics “This is Major Tom to Ground Control, I’m stepping through the door, and I’m floating in a most peculiar way” playing on loop.
Trying desperately to find a toehold in a reality her mind was screaming was a dream, she heard her father’s voice from the living room (though she knew she heard it, she couldn’t actually say she “heard” it, at least not in the typical way), “this is a fine kettle of fish you’ve found yourself in, I think you’d better figure it out sweetheart.”
Frist!
Will return with commentation, but, you know, Frist!

You are indeed, Frist!
Of course. But yes, frist 😀

“…a reality her mind was screaming was a dream…” goodness, how I love that line. And how I hate it when it’s true. Very very deep

Thanks, Paul.
Seems more recently, my own mind has been screaming so, lol

‘A fine kettle of fish’ – nice use of the cue and a good follow up to last week’s 6SS (which I’ve only just caught up with being absent). That was creepy – but also comforting – to hear her father’s voice, and maybe he will appear now and then to help guide her through this nightmare she has awoken to. David Bowie makes it a good soundtrack choice too.

Thank you again, V. (you were missed!)
Creepy/comforting was exactly what I was going for. Not to give anything away – I initially was trying to write it in to make readers aware he had died when she was a child. Since story may or may not be unfolding, seemed to write better to leave it undecided 😀
Oh man, doesn’t it? Was listening to that song (along w/a few others) on morning commute yesterday and that bit of lyric insisted… “use me, use me!” 🙂

Ah thanks, D, I missed being around – but have a fresh six coming right up 🙂 Yeah, I totally had the feeling the father had died, but likewise he could still be around with a few twists.
There was a series in the UK (think it was adapted to US too) called ‘Life on Mars’ in which they used the Bowie track of the same name to wonderful (and sad) effect. Love how music, drama and writing can interact so well.

I saw you just linked. Excellent! Have to jet to work now though. Look forward to reading your Six and will share out on the FB.
Astute, you 😀 Haven’t figured the twists yet, lol.
I watched the US version. As a matter of fact, listening to the Bowie CD on yesterday’s commute, that song came on and I was thinking about the show.
They are of the same, all 3. Interwoven, intrinsically linked.

Well said on the 3 being linked like that 🙂
Hope it was a good day at work.

It wasn’t bad, not bad at all 😀 Thanks for asking, V.

WOW, I’m truly fascinated–I especially like (though I’m not sure why) that it’s her father’s voice she hears….Will this story continue next week, I’m wondering?

Ooh, nice feedback Z + Z, thanks! I’m hoping it will 🙂

Wow! This is every bit as good as the first one, and I am so glad you decided to continue it! The last sentence was fabulous! 😊

Thank you, Josie! Figured I’d give it a try. Besides being fun, it’s good (and challenging!) practice 😀

It’s easy to tell you were in the spirit of the story, it flows really well from last week, yet also stands on its own!

I read this story first, then went back to read last week’s. Each stood alone, and also worked well together. You’ve got a Sixth Sense vibe going on.

That is at the crux of this writing thing. Writing a story that can stand alone; give the reader a sense of what’s going on.
Thank you for your feedback. Hm. Yeah… now that you mention it, lol. I loved that movie 🙂

I had to catch up too, and like Kristi read them in reverse. Those interactions of hearing voices “not in the typical way” have a way of grabbing one’s attention. Looking forward to finding out whether she is able to get out of that kettle.

They do and I believe I’m not the only person who has “heard” a voice when in fact it was physically impossible to have heard the person’s voice and yet we react to hearing it! Me too. I’m thinking perhaps there is a little more to this story. Guess we’ll find out 😀

Fine kettle of fish is one use i thought of, but i had to go with making a joke instead. Ma and Pa Kettle were before my time as well, but i found them amusing when watching the old movie channels.
She will figure it out, she’s not a local defense attorney for nothing.

I’ll have to keep an eye out on the old movie channels here, see if I can catch one.
Indeed. I’ve no doubt she will but not so sure she’s going to like it, lol. Yet… she might surprise me 🙂

Intriguing story line, Denise, along with an eerie atmosphere. Reminded me of the movie ” Sixth Sense”, one of my favourites, with Bruce Willis. The line ‘presumed to have died in her sleep’ threw me a bit, because there is no finality to it. So. Did she die in her sleep? The world is waiting for an answer.

Thank you, Len. A favorite of mine as well. I had no idea I was channeling Mr. Shyamalan until Kristi also commented it reminded her of that movie.
Certainly an important question! I am waiting for the answer as well 😀

I had to go back and read the gallery one too. (Where have I been???) Cool story(s) so well told. That’s a heck of a thing to wake up to.

Been asking myself that same question, lol.
Thanks. Yeah, wouldn’t want to be her 😉

Okay, I had to read last week’s installment, too, to confirm what I thought. She seems possibly to be in some type of purgatory, watching what’s going on
