Event Horizon. It’s a 6.

3rd installment of a serial story, the second installment can be read clicking here

*****

Blood stained boots slung over their shoulders, Jaya and Ryan walked the deserted shoreline, toes curling and releasing sand hardened by winter’s grip, footprints effaced by the undulating flood current, it was a much needed respite. Overhead, the gulls’ mews echoed in the blush of the dawning day, the last of the stars retreating to daylight’s embrace.

Seven!” Come back, boy” – Ryan dared a whistle hoping to get the dog’s attention, now a blur of golden fur 50 yards ahead.

Yesterday, Ryan and I had taken out 20 rabids between us, as Miguel and Anna, the last of our band of survivors to break off from the group, headed north 5 days earlier; we especially missed their help in this last skirmish.

Admittedly, it was a little easier traveling with just Ryan and Seven; although Seven was still a puppy, he was incredibly smart, learned quickly and, as it turned out, could smell a rabid a mile or two out; I had no doubt there was something very special about Seven.

True to most of the zombie apocalypse movie scripts in the before time, rabids were most active during the nighttime hours, disappearing as soon as the sun hit the horizon.

Hey, Jaya, sun is rising fast, we’d better get going… ”

      Thank you, Arlene.
I’m hoping the characters will be more forthcoming about their story as we go into the new year 🙂

You had me right there, at the edge of my seat.
Nice heightening of vividly peaceful sunset to contrast with the horror of ‘regular’ life. Half a dozen of excellence!

Thank you, Liz. Life’s new “regular” was an incredible horror show. Going to take awhile to establish any sense of a routine. For now, anyway 😀

What i don’t get, in many of these situations, is why people go off on their own. It seems safer to stay together and work together. Oh, well, excellent six.

Safety in numbers right?! I think it had more to do with uncertainty and having to put trust in complete strangers. That and conflicting personalities 😀
      Thank you, Mimi.

My 2 fave parts: “gulls’ mews echoed”–never heard that before, gulls ‘mews’–way cool! And the other fave is, “in the before time”. These 2, beginning and ending the episode, have a lyrical quality, adding to the ambiance of the setting. Marvelous, you’re a brilliant writer–Bedelia’s world pales, but what the hey, right? 🙂 Hope you had a most merry and blessed Christmas!! ❤

Thank you, Jael. I always appreciate your feedback. I was trying to “bookend” the scene so it would appear I came close 🙂
My Christmas was most merry and blessed. I hope yours was as well.
Btw, Bedelia’s world is full on 100 watt!

Oh YES, you succeeded with the bookending, totally! I must remember that, as a technique to try sometime–thanks for that tip 🙂 I’m so glad you had a great Christmas too–we all deserved a good one to balance out the year’s challenges. Now I just need to stop eating as though there’s no Tomorrow, haha! Thanks for the Bedelia compliment–my mind is buzzing with scenes of the wedding…hopefully this year, after she gives him a list of “deal breakers” (which of course Finn will sweep from her worry-list).

It’s going to be a fine New Year, 2021–my prayers for everyone across the globe have already been sent “express” to God, so we have much to look forward to! He’ll pour blessings in grand style and measure ❤ See you soon!

    good scene/installment

(for whatever reason) I liked the juxtaposition of ocean/beach and post-apocalyptic themes… sorta like a delicate crystal goblet full of ball bearings

      Thank you, Clark.
Especially, for the “sorta like..” lol. No, when envisioning beach walks at sunrise, the picture doesn’t typically include blood stained boots draped over one’s shoulders 😀

Yeah, kinda like what Clark said, it was fun because of the mix of sweet normal and yeah, zombies. Blood stained boots and a beach walk… nice!

I like the sense of force in the last phrase “the sun hit the horizon”. It was like the sun took a punch at the rabids.

I hadn’t considered that perspective but when you put it like that… Thank you, Frank!

Anything that begins with: “Blood stained boots slung over their shoulders” you know is going to be good. Finding the characters (narrowed down now) on the beach paints well a picture of horror and tranquility. Naming the dog ‘Seven’ is excellent 🙂 I also like ‘rabids’ and ‘before time’

Top marks, D, this PT3 of the serial has a sense of going forward and of time passed, and you packed plenty in without crowding it, plus a narration switch 🙂 and… poetry:

“Overhead, the gulls’ mews echoed in the blush of the dawning day, the last of the stars retreating to daylight’s embrace.”

Wow, such a beautiful line 😎😎

Thanks, V. Ah. “Seven”. Seemed appropriate since there were a total of 7 in the litter and he was the lone puppy unaffected. After he was named, I went a googling 😁 Seems “Seven is the number of completeness and perfection (both physical and spiritual)“. Works for me! I’d like to think I could complete this little ditty of a serial but not so sure I’ve got the chops.

As always, I appreciate your feedback. A little secret – the narration switch was not intentional. It was me getting lost, lol. But I remind myself, do this writing thing more, it will get a little better 😀

That was my favorite line as well 😊😎

haha, sometimes the best writing moments happen by accident. I also thought of the film ‘Seven’ for some reason. It’s just such a cool name for a dog + with the physical and spiritual connections you researched 😎

As for finishing the serial… just let it take you as and when the mood and inspiration is there, that way no pressure 🙂
