“Bu-u-t mo—o-m! I really, really want to go! “
“Your father and I aren’t too keen on letting you go into the city to see a major rock concert – you’re only 10 years old; it’s no place for a kid.”
“But, Mom, I wouldn’t be goin’ by myself, your sister’s going to take me and she’s an adult!”
Caught in the middle of youth’s persuasion, too far past the red light to stop, I played the almost impartial mediator, “ya know, there’s a famous theory espousing the benefits of music on the developing mind of a child; on top of that, he’d be gaining first hand, educational insight into an aspect of today’s youth culture, (*smiling*) besides Sis, his friends would think he was really cool. Don’t worry, you know I wouldn’t let anything happen to him.”
– We often never know life’s defining moments until the finger of retrospect taps us on the shoulder pointing to the moments of how we came to be. –

I love that last sentence, Denise: so true! I remember the Sex Pistols version of Anarchy in the UK. A defining period of my young life, punk seems so tame now.

Isn’t it! Did you see them perform live? There’s nothing like the original of a song, no matter how good a cover of it is. I’m a little biased towards the Crue’s rendition as I’d heard them do it before I ever listened to the Sex Pistols sing it. Punk as we knew it is a page in history for sure, but there are some bands around with heavy punk influences and for that, I’m grateful.

it’s all in the story we tell for coherence, for sure.

That’s a very good way of framing it, Liz.

So TRUE, this: – We often never know life’s defining moments until the finger of retrospect taps us on the shoulder pointing to the moments of how we came to be. – Well Done!!!

Good point at the end. Many defining moments are when we should have done something different and only in retrospect realize it.

Thanks, Frank. Ever hopeful is the idea that, as we age, we make wiser if not better choices moving forward.

an excellent manifestation of the higher forms of this Six Sentence format… to provide a lattice for the Reader to hang their own memories on and, if lucky realize more about themselves than before they read it.

And sometimes that retrospect is laced with tons of regret. Let’s hope not in this case.
