Starry Night. It’s a 6.

The Bistro was at full capacity just as it pretty much has been since the Gatekeeper’s miraculous resurrection except on this particular evening, Mimi and her spatula-slinging henchman Tom decided to celebrate his return.

Roger’s band was on the compact stage and for a small group did a decent job keeping the individual conversations, dancing feet and the subtle percussion of clinking bottles and glasses from dominating the space, at least it did for everywhere except the half-dark hallway that started at the far end of the bar and continued past the Manager’s Office.

“While everyone’s out there enjoying themselves, I’m sitting at this desk working more hours than it should take – how the hell does this happen… and you guys – Jimi, Johnny, hell any of you staring down from these walls, what the hell, you can’t materialize, pull up the wing backs by the fireplace and keep the Bartender company while she does the books?!”

Denise smiled to herself as she set the ledgers aside and after stretching her stiffening legs, pushed the leather chair away from the desk all the while hearing in her mind Ford, the Café’s resident “Fixer”, in lecture mode about the key to efficiently getting through copious amounts of paperwork being organization; she looked around the office and the sense of wonder that never seemed to leave, humbled, as she knew there was so much more to this place.

Sitting made the Bartender restless and she knew she’d reached her limit of sedentary – she needed movement, needed the outdoors, fresh air, she needed something out there. Denise closed the door to the office, caught sight of Nick on his way out the door, took note of what he was holding and thanked her lucky stars she’d have an evening outside the Bistro; she called over got a spare helmet?”

The help would be most welcome, Mimi. Perhaps. On second thought, not sure hiring out would be in our best interest.
As you know, the Café’s books are somewhat…unique.

What was I thinking, Keith, duh!
Excepting the bookkeeping part, I bet you had a great time!

Have a great evening, D! You and the Gatekeeper both earned it!
I agree about keeping outsiders away from the books… and I hope whatever Mimi and her sidekick, Tom, are up to in the shiny new kitchen doesn’t call for another visit by brigade.
    Ford: didn’t I say you’d be multi-tasking? 😉

Thank you, Chris! The helmet hair this morning was well worth it 😁
I daresay Mimi will not let anything, or Tom (kidding!) occur that would require loud sirens and flashing lights anywhere near the Café.

Denise, your writing is nothing short of amazing–as is this serial you pen. Surely you’ll sell it and make the NYT Best Seller list for months! Bravo!

Thank you, S. But mine is but one of many Tales from the Six Sentence Café and Bistro.
But ya know…NYT Best Seller list has a nice ring to it 😉

I realize there are more of you active in the Cafe & Bistro–and I wondered if the core group alone can use the new image for posts? You should totally go for the NYT Best Seller publishing/sales goal!!💖

While there are 7 Proprietors of the Café (myself, Clark, Nick Mimi, Chris, Ford and Jenne), the logo (thanks to Spira!) may be used by anyone writing a Café Six. If you go to Clark’s blog at the link below, you’ll see the genesis post, if you will, of the establishment of the virtual place known as the Six Sentence Café and Bistro. As a matter of fact, we held Chris’s book launch there in March. It was a blast! Anyway, beginning from that first Six we all began writing a whole bunch of Cafe Sixes. Mimi, Ford, Jenne. It’s a perpetual “walk on” situation whenever the spirit moves you. Ask Tom. He’ll tell you 😀

Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine-

In less words: once familiar with the place and the avatars, absolutely write yourself in! When you see someone using the logo it signifies a Cafe Six as opposed to a “regular” 6. Same format: 6 sentences, use the prompt word but the story centers around the Café and any one or more of the 7 Proprietors in some capacity.

Chris? Clark? Nick? Did I leave anything out?

P.S. I did not intend to not respond to your question at Thursday’s post. I hope this answers it. Please convey to Bedelia there will be a table reserved for her should she wish to stop in for a cup of tea 😊

Thank you Denise for the explanation.
Though I love the image for Cafe, I appreciate the distinction, and don’t see myself fitting in (I change blog personas too frequently). And Bedelia thanks you for your kindness over the years…but she may be replaced by a new character (with some similarities to her 🙂 ) You are the most wonderful hostess of “6”, Denise–so kind and generous, and encouraging always. Blessings to you🤍

Staarlz, if I may…none of us knew he or she would fit in…we just took a deep breath and with the encouragement (you have been witnessing)…off we go.
Try it…what’s the worst that can happen? Have Denise the Bartender chase you for unpaid drinks?😁
              Nah!!

    A “spatula-slinging henchman”… now that’s a name I’ve never been called before! 😀
And you’ve just reminded me, Denise, I need a new spatula.

I guess Tom, you best be off to Williams and Sonoma!
P.S. Better get 2. Just in case, lol

So tight, and original, and evocative of both sense and memory. And the guitar tells me what the following motorcycle ride felt like…wind & dappled sun whipping & flickering past as the road rolls.
    At least in my imagination…

So Denise asked for the spare helmet. One needs to get out of the office once in a while.

Brilliant scene-setting, D. Easy to picture the ambience following Nick’s return, the band playing, the kitchen warming up!
“Spatula-slinging Henchman” is awesome for Tom 😎

Gad you get to go for a run (on two wheels) outside the Café, D, sure Nick’s got a spare helmet ready for such times 😎

Ford still ain’t fixing a damn thing, though I agree with the organisation bit 100% 😁 Now, where did I put my pen, and phone, and reading glasses…

Thank you, V. Not so sure Tom enjoyed the moniker but I think he’s getting a sense of how we are ’round these parts, lol

      Much needed!

No, but he will 😉 You know very well where, your pen is right ….oh, no you don’t! I am not going to tell you where they are 😎

It is not just the words you use…it is not just the endless revisions…

As Ford said , brilliant scene-setting…the ambience…yet, it is not just that…

…I think it is the breaths between the words, the subtle change of rhythm that has created a signature GirlieonTheEdge riff, the same way you hear a sustained note and you know it’s Gary.

    Now, the ride…
…allow me to say you are a fantastic driver/co pilot!
And a starry night it was…

Of course we couldn’t do without some tunes, yeah?
For the second time you graciously put up with my horrific voice as our echoes bouncing off unseen walls found no resistance :

    I don’t know where I’m goin’
But I sure know where I’ve been
Hanging on the promises in songs of yesterday
And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time
Here I go again, here I go again
Though I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I’m looking for
Oh Lord, I pray you give me strength to carry on
‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams.

I appreciate you sharing that, Spira. I’ve often wondered if I had a “voice”. I love that you used music as metaphor.

Why, thank you! Yes, the sky was gorgeous.
Of course, there must be music!
