This week’s (1st??) Six Sentence Story picks up where last we left the Bartender, Denise, in “Just Another Dark o’clock Night“, which in retrospect I believe was a retroactive “walk on” to Spira’s SSS. Huh. I think I’ve got that straight, lol. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this, a Tale from the Six Sentence Café and Bistro as my Six Sentence Story.
*********************************
Unlike men, canines will not abandon those whom they have chosen, it is a life pledge to love, defend, comfort, die in the protection of those chosen. If they’re lucky, this same love is reciprocated and thus, love perfected.
The last thing I expected when Nick answered the door last night was to be greeted by 4 paws of intimidation and yet, at the very first instance of eye contact, there was an instinctive mutual sense of “you’re OK“; Nick had stood back and to the left, the thickly muscled black dog, white star shape patch on his chest standing dead center in the entranceway already having assumed position of guard and guardian. Laughter barely stifled and valiantly attempting to keep a straight face, Nick stood silently as I looked down into gooey caramel colored eyes, “mind if I come in Buddy, I promise not to bite“.
Though only a few hours, it was a restful sleep; awakening begrudgingly, it was to the robust aroma of freshly brewed coffee and a wet nose nudging my hand -“ok, ok, I get it, yes, getting up now, thank you… come on boy – lead me to your kitchen.” Leaning against an empty, handmade stoneware mug sitting on the kitchen’s cedar block table was a note, in part reading: “Denise, thank you in advance for taking Hūnga with you to the Café today, Gatekeeper duties have called me to navigate a labyrinth of, shall we say, contracts that have been pending; I’ll be by to pick him up around 5 and oh yeah… I think Hūnga likes you, N.”
Always trust your dog’s instinct about people! Well played.

He should be, Frank but we can be fooled sometimes. Dogs are known to be master manipulators, lol

Ohhhh, how wonderfully heartwarming!! And I’m compelled to say, I LOVE the opening 2-word phrase…”unlike men” 🙂 (Though neither women have dogs, Bedelia and Zorah agree 🙂 )

The change from third to first person narrator emphasises the change in mood from the ever-alert, sharp bartender in the SSC&C of last week’s episode to the more personal exhausted woman behind the bartender that we meet here, and who needs exactly the unconditional warmth this dog can give her. Nice one, Denise.

Jenne. You are (never a doubt in my mind), an astute observer.
There is nothing I can say in response to your comment except…thank you.

Yeah, never mind Nick’s cosy, warm, relaxing safe haven of an apartment …
LOL
I’m messing with you Jenne!
Voting with both hands your comment.

oh boy! I get to repeat: Dogs are perfect lifeforms.
Now, if anyone wants to say, “The games afoot’ we can totally call them on it.

They say you tell a person’s good if a dog loves them. Just thought I’d mention it!

That is so sweet, dogs have a sense that we as humans have perhaps forgotten. I miss my dogs dearly, and the soft/moist nose. Well played on my emotions!

Thank you. I agree they do have a very special sense. They are willing to take us at face value, give us an opportunity.
My heart goes out to you. I don’t believe we ever don’t miss them.

Overlooking the fact that nobody gave any credit to the Gatekeeper ( to be expected in the presence of a perfect being and the one and only) I would say…that this was one beauuutiful door answered!
Hūnga has been mistreated,
has been abused
He’s been struck downhearted, baby,
he’s been confused.
But I know, yes I know
He will be treated with whole lotta love
And we all be singing in the rain
Cause, nothing else matters.
