Going Down? It’s a 6.

They were odd and felt so real it was difficult to tell if you were awake or dreaming, the dreams were disturbing, each one taking place in an elevator but in different buildings in different office parks.

You’re running late, catching every red light and getting behind every dump truck in the DMV, then you see it dead ahead – your office’s new location. In the morning fog, like the hull of an enormous stucco finished ocean liner, five floors belted in identical tinted windows; you remember the feeling the first time you stood in the lobby…surreal.

Pulling into the parking lot you notice a parking space right outside the double front doors to the building; smiling at your good luck, you back the blue sedan in between the white lines (for the quick getaway you always joke), not once thinking it odd it was the only empty parking spot in the front lot.

The lobby was decent size, the floor, clinical grey and white which led to the elevators, clean, stark, there were no plants to give an illusion of life, the elevators… 2 on the right and oddly, 1 on the left. Where the 4th elevator should be was an indentation, the space it was to have occupied was boarded over, painted and made to look as if there had always been 3 and only 3 elevators and in an indescribable way, you found this just as disturbing as the dreams from the night before.

When nightmare and reality become indistinguishable…it’s time to get a new job!
Glad I read this is daylight hours!
Don’t know why, but this made me flashback to the Tim Robbins early version of “Jacob’s Ladder.” >>shiver<<

You are so right on that one, Liz!
      Thank you!
I’ve always liked Tim Robbins, loved him in Shawshank, but never watched Jacob’s Ladder. I can see how this story might have you thinking along those same lines.

Music is fabulous but I feel like I’m running from something intangible. I’m exhausted and wondering if I parked my car in the boss’s parking spot. What a way to start the day … or end a dream.

      I’m awake!
Not if I can help it, lol

Thank you, D. I based my story on a recent experience in one of the elevators in the new office.
Besides, I’ve never seen a building with an odd number of elevators. 3 just seems “wrong” 😉

Something is strange about the missing elevator and that all too convenient empty parking spot.

Dream and reality particles collided masterfully under your guidance, Denise.(man, don’t they actually do…despite our pity efforts to seek practical explanations 😉 )
Well, it could be much worst..judging from the elevator pranks I watched. lol

Indeed. I have now “looked him up” and will listen further.
Lucky find or was there more? 🤔
      Thank you, Nick.
      Elevator pranks?! Who? Why?!
My experience last week: arrive work, the single elevator being worked on. 2 workmen in discussion – about not fixing/fixing, liberal use of the f word. I ride 1 of the 2 elevators on other side to the 4th floor.
Leave office somewhat late that evening. Press button for elevator. Wouldn’t you know it. The one trying to get fixed earlier in the day dings. I don’t get in it. Waited a few minutes. Press the button again – surely other people are using the elevators so chances are one of the other 2 elevators will ding. Yeah..no, lol I think for a moment, rational mind pushing aside other thoughts.
I get into the compartment and never, in my life has an elevator door closed so quickly! 😆
We begin a somewhat noisy descent and as the #2 appears on the screen, the elevator makes a loud grinding sound as if it’s catching on something. There’s a bit of a small jolt, a few seconds pass and finally, it delivers me to the 1st floor lobby.
      Elevator pranks?! Cruelty!
To think I rode an elevator to the top of the Empire State Building…

Judging from what you just described, you went easy with your Six!
        😮😆

PS: I know you will find Ludovico’s pieces you will get lost in.
