Curtain Call. It’s a 6.

…it’s ok to sob little girl, eyes are not only for smiling
let your tears fall where they may, pay no mind to what they say
it’s the circle of life, the measure of which is never certain
let whispers fade with the sun as it sets, one chance all anyone gets
it’s an unknown ride on a wide open range, landscape unexplored
let your tears fall where they may, it doesn’t matter what they say…

Welcome to GirlieOnTheEdge and another edition of Six Sentence Stories!
Well! Not that you want to know what I had to do to write this post, lol. For anyone familiar with WordPress and the “new” Block Editor, then you have a clue how persistent WP is in tricking everyone into switching from Classic Editor to the “Block”. Had my first experience where inserting the Inlinkz code was a “challenge”. Needless to say, we are here with the code. With the magical configuration of numbers and letters that allows each of us to link the URL to the thumbnail to our Six Sentence Story. Word to WP – no one, no entity stops Six Sentence Stories. Am I right?! So let’s get on with the business of sharing stories and poetry and new chapters and scenes from our wips and get it out there, people! As Tom B is famous for saying….”Let’s Go!”. Exactly 6 sentences is all it takes to walk through the door to adventure and magic and wonder and well… open it and find out for yourselves.

Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt!

Welcome to GirlieOnTheEdge and Sunday’s prompt word reveal for Six Sentence Stories!
Wait! How is it we have not used an “R” word in…how long?! Thank goodness for the spontaneity gods. Only way I can explain how this week’s prompt word was chosen. Actually, it wasn’t chosen, not really. Whatever I was thinking at a particular moment earlier this morning as I rushed about trying not to look at the time, the prompt word barged through the door announcing itself as this week’s prompt word. Isn’t that the way of words and writing and storytelling at times? Words rush in and if we’re quick enough we catch them as they race by; then arrange them in each of our unique styles. Because each of us has a unique style which is the thing what makes Six Sentence Stories so very cool. Which is why, it tickles me each Sunday to write this post. To find out what in the world(s) the prompt word will prompt in our global collective of writers who wander through these parts. How about it? Let’s voice another story, poem, scene or next chapter in our serial story in exactly, precisely, 6 sentences. Link it back here midweek. Let’s keep this party going, keep the writing tap a’flowing 😎

PROMPT WORDRANGE

For even the most childish intoxication with progress will soon be forced to recognize that writing and books have a function that is eternal. It will become evident that formulations in words and the handling on of these formulations through writing are not only important aids but actually the only means by which humanity can have a history and continuing consciousness of itself.” – Hermann Hesse

A Walk on the Wild Side. It’s a Café Six.

Hey, thanks for letting me crash here last night, right cool of you man” – Denise, Proprietor and Bartender of the Six Sentence Café & Bistro couldn’t keep the wink out of her smile as she stared into the eyes of a man who used (rumor had it) his grandmother’s rosary beads as his eyeglass chain. Lou Ceasare’s reputation, no secret within certain circles, was subtly hinted at by the tall thin man when he asked her to do a favor for his friend, the owner of the Bottom of the Sea Strip Club and Lounge whose head bartender went out on maternity leave 3 weeks earlier than expected.

My pleasure doll, you need anything, just call.” The emphasis on “anything” told her all she needed to know about the man with teeth like daggers and a laugh once described as like “the burgeoning rumble of a domestic dispute between grizzly bears”; details about his business dealings or any other dealings were unnecessary, she understood the man’s ethos.

Call me anytime you’re in a pinch, Lou“. Cell phone ringing, Lou held up his left index finger to the woman whose eyes sparkled like champagne; turning away from the bar, he walked to the far side of the lounge, voice low.

Denise’s walk was legend in and around the SSC&B for being distinctive in rhythm and meter, seamlessly fluid yet smoothly syncopated, she moved quickly yet never appeared hurried; so it came as no surprise when Lou, having finished his phone call, turned back to find the woman, who in his mind would be his new head bartender, gone, the door just closing behind her.

Welcome to GirlieOnTheEdge and another edition of Six Sentence Stories!
Once upon a time, it was regular practice for me to be awake and writing at this time (4:30) each morning. And, in spite of having only 4 hours of sleep, there was/is no underlying worry “get up now and you’ll be exhausted in 12 hours“. Lack of sleep doesn’t always translate to “tired”. There are those occasions when it is sufficient for enthusiasm and energy to be driving the car. I decided my goal is was to write this post by 5:05 am. Why not? Which is the very question I ask you. Why not, write a Six Sentence Story? A ready made opportunity to engage your imagination and then tell us all about it in precisely 6 sentences. Where did your character travel? What did your character do? Who did they meet along the way? Whether the next episode in your serial, a piece of poetry pie or a smatter of fictional day to day, you’re invited to write and share. Here, at Six Sentence Stories. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. EST. We’ll be waiting.

Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt!

Welcome to GirlieOnTheEdge and Sunday’s prompt word reveal for Six Sentence Stories!
Here’s a question. When is it we realize we’ve become a better writer? Some of us write every day. No argument that’s a surefire method for improving more quickly than not writing every day. Yet, for those who write mostly for a writing prompt, when is it, or perhaps, what is it, alerts us when we’ve crossed a threshold? Yes, a bit of ruminating going on this gloomy, rain spattered morning in the Mid-Atlantic. How are you doing? How are your characters doing? Any new adventures? Imo, there’s no better place on the internet than here, at Six Sentence Stories, to tell of these adventures; to introduce new characters. Series or one offs, doesn’t matter. This is the venue for showcasing stories told in exactly 6 sentences. The venue and community challenging us to write better. Challenging us to keep the art of storytelling alive. Whatsay? Shall we gather round the fire pit beginning this Wednesday evening? Tell some more stories?

PROMPT WORD:  METER

All autobiography is storytelling; all writing is autobiography.” – J. M. Coetzee

… and Counting. It’s a 6.

Face it – lately, you’re all over the map, all over the place, spread over from here to kingdom come and that’s just your attention span. Like the Golden Gate Bridge over…the Golden Gate, focus has not been your friend. No blinders on your mind’s eyes, they gaze, search and scan the four directions simultaneously. Courted by intellectual and creative chaos, you feel the tug, feel the pull… almost towards the verge of concentration. And then, gone, poof! Not…giving up…synapses stretched, stretching, sta-retchhhhh – we have contact “Houston”; firing on all cylinders.

Thank you, Doug, for your last comment at Sunday’s prompt post. I love the first quote by Mr. Coetzee. Surely, a sentiment we can all identify with, for how is it we became writers and aspiring writers without first, the love of reading? I would wager every single person who participates in the Six Sentence Story Blog Hop, has many a story to tell of their childhood and the books they loved to read. Of course, this is not to say writing and the love of reading did not attract some of us later in life. Doesn’t matter when the magic of reading and the mystery of writing changed our lives, it is sufficient it did. What do you say my co-writers? Shall we share some magic? Some mystery? Shall we travel strange lands or back streets of imaginary places and tell a story? A story in exactly 6 sentences? I say let’s! Rendezvous back here, at the ‘Edge, 6:00 pm EST. Link your road map. Let’s travel imagination road.

Sunday’s Six Sentence Story Word Prompt!

Welcome to GirlieOnTheEdge and Sunday’s prompt word reveal for Six Sentence Stories!
Today, we arrive at the last of the “Writer’s Choice” prompt words, courtesy of Forestwood. Truth be be told, I had to google the word but! Six Sentence Stories is a writing challenge after all, yes?! No matter our skill level, this weekly exercise can only go towards making us better writers. And when we write better, we feel better. (what? mic was live on that last bit?!) Many of us at Six Sentence Stories write a lot of fiction, a few dabble in science fiction, others walk the alleys of detective stories. And lest we not forget, our poets. Writing is the glue that binds our community. We count among us, published authors and poets, aspiring authors and those who enjoy writing to the challenge of a prompt. And we do this each week, in exactly and precisely, 6 sentences. Please, join in this week and set a spell for another round of Six Sentence Stories. Write, write, and write some more. Write and write ’til you drop to the floor. (da**it! again?! you said the mic was off!)

PROMPT WORDVERGE

I always like to write three versions of a book. The first is always agony and chaos; no one could understand it. With the second you get the shape, it’s more or less all right. I write both of those in longhand. The third draft I type out with two fingers: it’s for refining of meaning, additions and subtractions. I think my novels usually begin with characters; you have them floating about in your head and it may be years before they get together in a situation. Characters interest me more than situations.” – Patrick White

I’ll Take “What are the Odds” for a $1,000, Alex. It’s a 6.

The crackling, spitting of the fire in the family room’s soot stained brick fireplace was all but a smoked whisper-whiff of burned embers. Winter had arrived another year, another year forecast to be even colder than the last. The old man, 3 layers deep in a woolen sweater, sat comfortably in the center of a 3 section leather sofa relishing the silence of early morning; as if a veil lifted from his eyesight, he noticed for the first time that where he always sat (in the middle) directly faced the back door leading outside to their expansive patio garden where perennials now hibernated beneath the cover of red berried bushes.

It was this day, the old man’s body relaxed, with his mind soon following suit wandering and drifting until it bumped into a soft, half singing voice “age is a state of mind, life a passage of time”. He didn’t think he’d fallen asleep yet his body convulsed suddenly; shifting slightly, he sat more upright. Glancing first to his right, then to his left, his heart began to race at the sight of the worn and faded spots on the leather sofa seeing them as if for the first time, memories flooding his mind like a breached dam; as his heart approached the finish line, a feeling of peace enveloped him as he felt the arms of his loved ones wrap around him in eternal love.
