Life Walks. It’s a 6.

It’s Wednesday evening and again I seem to think I can travel back to my youth where pumping one out (as in term paper) the night before was sop.  To say I’ve gotten into the habit of writing a Six Sentence Story every week is a bit premature, but to say that I’ve gotten into a routine of trying to write one the night before is dead on lol. Welcome to my place, GirlieOnTheEdge and this is my Six Sentence Story.

She glanced at the giant “antique” wall clock hanging on the far wall near the peak of the great room they called living room, then down into the teddy bear brown eyes of 2 seemingly patient black Labrador Retrievers sitting like perfect stone doorstops as they waited for one more person…

The momentary calm evaporated as quickly as a drop of cold water on a heated fry pan when the other half of the human equation came out from the bedroom calling “who’s ready to go for a walk?!”

On cue, pandemonium broke loose as each dog began their individual canine happy dance in celebration of the anticipated outing, body slamming each other, as well as their human counterparts.

As was their habit, man walked the female canine, the woman walked the male canine and true to speculation or simple observation, each dog was indeed a “daddy’s girl” and a “momma’s boy”.

Years passed, the ritual sustained and constant, it rarely varied as routine was routine, and the routine nothing but pleasure.

Until a day when 2 became 1, 1 became none and there was left 2 divided by zero…

Okay, I was doing just fine until the last line…
You know how to bring on the tears. This is such a beautifully written six and for someone who can’t resist labs and knows how deeply one can develop a relationships with dogs, you had me at “teddy bear brown eyes.”

I promise I don’t do it intentionally, Pat!
Thank you so much. Imo, and I’m sure you agree, the relationship with a dog is a bond that truly is lifelong and life changing.

Well done. The hardest thing, knowing we outlive our dogs.
    Good walks though, good walks.
(Got my WordPress figured out by the way)

I’m new to your blog and I’m already beginning to like it. I love the way you convey loss- ‘Until a day when 2 became 1, 1 became none and there was left 2 divided by zero’. Really moving.

    Two perspectives, same Six:
Reading it as anyone who has/will come across it; reactions as described above.

Reading as a traveller of time aboard The Imperfect sailing towards the Impossible, from the origin first post to the Timelines, Gift that is Zoe and Alex, to this walk.
Why is it you can still feel the sensation of their body against your legs as they look up to you, inquiring and reassuring simultaneously?
Why is it you can still feel a tingling running through your right arm to your chest every time something triggers the memory of their happy dance?
Divided maybe….but the remaining sum it is never zero.
